SYNOPSIS
Ys is great because Newsom confronts a mountain of conflicting feelings, and sifts through them for every nuance. The people who hear this record will split into two crowds: The ones who think it's silly and precious, and the ones who, once they hear it, won't be able to live without it. – Pitchfork
It’s unlikely that you’ll often listen to it in one bout, but whether beguiled one day by its exotic petals and blooms or the next by the less showy trees in the background, Have One on Me is an Elysian record that you’ll return to again and again. – NME
Expect otherworldly vocals that defy convention from one of the most colourful characters in contemporary music. American harpist, pianist and singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom is one of the bravest new voices to have emerged from the indie-music scene in recent years.
Born in 1982 in California to musical parents, Joanna grew up in the small town of Nevada City where she was exposed to music from a young age. She started learning to play the piano at the age of four, before tackling the harp, her instrument of choice.
She later studied composition and creative writing at Mills College in Oakland, California. Her two self-released EPs of homemade recordings, Walnut Whales (2002) and Yarn and Glue (2003), so impressed fellow musician Will Oldham that he passed her disc on to his record label Drag City, which subsequently signed her up.
Her debut album, The Milk-Eyed Mender, was released in 2004, followed by a tour with Devendra Banhart and Vetiver. Her second album, Ys (2006), received great acclaim while also dividing opinions. The ambitious project, containing just five songs ranging from seven to 16 minutes in duration, is more than matched by the latest release, Have One on Me (2010), a three-disc CD set boasting around three hours of new recordings.
As surprising as her releases are, Joanna is known to perform a harp version of a Robert Burns poem or debut songs impromptu at her concerts. But the chance to listen to her unique voice, accompanied by her harp music and the support of her own band and three other musicians on strings and trombone, is already a sufficient reward. Get ready to be blown away.
